Blood is a living tissue which is liquid in nature. It is made up of four components - plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Every component has different function in body. The whole blood is a mixture of about 55% plasma and 45% blood cells. Blood constitute about 7-8 % of our body weight. Study of blood and their related disorders is called hematology.

THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF BLOOD ARE:

  • Transport of oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues.
  • Carrying antibodies to fight infection
  • Regulating temperature of body.
  • Helps to remove waste products of kidney and liver.

About Blood Disorders

Disorders that affects functioning of blood is called blood disorders or also called hematological disorders. There are many blood related disorders that may affect one or more component of blood some are easily treated or some disorders are life threatening.

ACCORDING TO COMPONENT OF BLOOD AFFECTED THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BLOOD DISORDERS WHICH ARE GIVEN BELOW:-

  1. Anemia: decreased number of red blood cells or low hemoglobin.
  2. Leukopenia: decreased number of white blood cells.
  3. Thrombocytopenia: low number of platelets.
  4. Blood cancers: such as leukemia and myeloma.
  5. Eosinophilic disorders: problem with one type of white blood cells.

Symptoms Of Blood Disorders

Signs and symptoms are different in all conditions it depend upon the component of blood affected by disease.

THE COMMON SYMPTOMS ARE:

  • Blood clot (Phlebitis) – It occurs usually in leg that may cause swelling, redness, warmth feeling or shortness of breath.
  • Skin rashes caused by few platelets (Petechiae)
  • Blood blisters in mouth
  • Swelling of lymph nodes due to blood cancer like leukemia, lymphomas.
  • Yellowish skin (Pallor) caused by anemia.
  • Eating of ice, dirt, clay (Pica) due to iron deficiency anemia.

Risk Factors

SOME FACTORS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF BLOOD DISORDERS IN PERSON WHICH ARE GIVEN BELOW:

  1. Anemia - It is common in nearly 2 billion people throughout the world. It occurs at advanced age due to deficiency of iron. It is also common in women due to blood loss in menstrual bleeding.
  2. Leukopenia - due to infection that affects bone marrow. Due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and drugs like clozapine, chloramphenicol etc.
  3. Thrombocytopenia - It is mainly in people who are addicted to alcohol. Some drugs like hydroxycarbamide, interferons, alpha and beta heparin can cause low platelet count.It is also common among people with vitamin B12 and folate deficiency.

Ayurvedic Outlook

According to ayurveda, blood is considered as Jiva (life) - 'रक्तो जीव इति स्थिति:' as per ayurveda, blood is one of dhatus (body tissues) among 7 dhatus. Ayurveda mentions that oxygen is carried by blood to all the cells - 'प्राणा: शोणितं अनुवर्तन्ते'.
In Ayurveda, anemia is called Panduroga (pandu means white). In this condition, the color of skin and mucous membrane looks white. In anemia, the hemoglobin content in blood decreases that affects the functioning of whole body. In India 70% pregnant women and children and 40% males get affected with anemia.
Blood is related with pitta doshas. Anaemia is disorder related with blood due to pitta imbalance.
