Polycythemia Vera is a disorder of the bone marrow. It begins in the soft
center of the bone marrow. The red blood cells of the bone marrow starts
multiplying in number. And, this multiplication, if takes place abnormally
gives rise to the condition of Primary Polycythemia Vera. The blood becomes very
thick. This may also result in stroke, heart attack or blood clots. This
disorder usually develops over a period of time. And, it often becomes life
threatening, if not diagnosed and treated properly on time.
This disorder is
also known by several names. These are Polycythemia, Erythremia, Vaquez
disease, Polycythemia Rubra Vera and Osler - Vaquez disease
Causes Of Primary
Polycythemia Vera
One doesn't catch
this disorder just like a flu. It occurs due to the malfunctioning of a gene in
the body. This gene takes care of the fact that the bone marrow produces a
proper number of blood cells in the body. It makes sure that excessive red
blood cells are not formed in the bone marrow of the individuals. There not
only occurs an increase in the number of red blood cells, the counts of the
platelets and white blood cells also increase significantly. Though rarely, but
children may inherit this disease from their parents.
